Flood Map Modernization
Detailed Thorough Precise.
Using Product Catalog to Map a Firmette of Your Property
You can produce a flood map called a FIRMette through FEMA’s Map Service Center. Use the following steps to produce a map for an area or property of interest:
After accessing FEMA’s Map Service Center website, click on Product Catalog on the left side of the menu bar.
Click on Future FIRMs.
Selecting a Community
Following a series of drop down boxes, Select a State (Kansas), Select a County (Shawnee County), and Select a Community (Auburn, Rossville, Silver Lake, Topeka, Willard or Shawnee County). Then select Get Future FEMA Issued Flood Maps.
Since you will probably not know on which map panel on which to find the parcel or area of interest, start by viewing the Index Map. This is the first map appearing in the list of map panels. Click on the globe with magnifying glass in the View column to access the map.
Resizing the Map
When the Index Map first appears, it is generally small and needs to be resized to be readable. Click on MAX Zoom Out to enlarge the panel. You can continue to resize the map panel by using the Zoom In and Zoom Out function.
Identifying the Map Panel Number
Let’s say you are interested in determining whether property located at 3200 SW 33rd Ct. in the City of Topeka is located within a Special Flood Hazard Area (Zone A or AE). You determine from the Index Map that the subject property is located on Map Panel 20177C0214E.
Select the Map Panel
Go back to the list of map panels and search the list for 20177C0214E and click on the globe with magnifying glass icon. You will probably have to click on the MAX Zoom Out button again to more clearly identify the location of the property. Once you’ve identified the general location of the property, click on Make a FIRMette.
Preparing Your Map
Under Select & Move Areas, you have the opportunity to adjust the green boxes that include the Print Area (corresponding to your area of interest), Scale and North Arrow, and, Title Block. Generally, the only thing that needs to be adjusted is the Print Area box to cover the area of interest. Once everything is set, select Adobe PDF or Image File under Create FIRMette. For purposes of this illustration, we will select Adobe PDF.
Printing or Saving Your FIRMette
This will bring up an image including the map panel section you selected along with the north arrow and map scale and title block. Then click on Save your FIRMette.
Print or Save Option
Here you have the option to Open the image in Adobe Reader or Save the image on your computer. In this instance, let’s say we want to print our map. Select Open.
Printing the Map
Selecting Open will bring up you map image in Adobe Reader. From here, simply select print.
There you did it. You have made a FIRMette of your property.
